As I prepare to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s this month, I’d like to share with you the “why”.
Lilia Amelia Treto del Pino, my Mami, was born on June 28, 1917 in Ciego de Avila, Cuba. She and my father, Mario Treto, immigrated to the United States as newlyweds in 1948. (The photo above is from their wedding day.) They loved one another dearly and reflected the definition of being “in love.” This love, most probably, is what kept them together while working several blue collar jobs to make ends meet in their new country. When I was in 7th grade, my mother worked in a cosmetics factory. There, she began selling clothing to her co-workers as a side hustle. A few years later, she launched a wholesale clothing business that came with us to Miami when we relocated here. I guess this is where I get my entrepreneurial spirit.
My mother was a strong, no-nonsense, hard working mother, wife, sister and business owner. I owe my motherly instincts, work ethic, and integrity to her. Her strength was apparent as she battled Alzheimers for more than 12 years; she struggled to understand her demise. The disease quickly stole her memories, independence, and ability to care for herself. The day she forgot who I was remains one of the saddest days of my life.
I know I am not alone in watching a loved one suffer from Alzheimer’s. I share the same exact stories as many of you. So please, won’t you join me in spreading awareness and helping to find a cure?
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be taking place on Nov. 16 at Museum Park. I have joined the team of my good friends, Maria & Humberto Comellas, to do my part in helping to meet the fundraising target of $1 Million.
